GoPro will not charge and record simultaneously?

I own a GoPro Hero+ Silver. I recently updated it and wish to make a video. Due to it being time lapse I want to charge and record at the same time. I have plugged it into the wall, turned it and the wifi on but the display is showing the media connection icon as if it were plugged into a computer. I am unable to control the device from my phone in this state. I have also tried turning it on then plugging it in but it just seems to cause the device to freeze up and crash. What could be causing this and how do I fix it to where I can record and have power?
