Gopro studio: when in edit mode I have audio and a black screen?

I've been trying to get a little better at editing videos with the gopro studio, and I haven't run into that many problems with it. But i recently bought myself an external hard drive to put my videos on so i don't fill up too much space on the internal drive on my PC.
The problem I've been having is if I upload a video file from my external hard drive it will work fine on the first step, but once i convert the file and go to the edit step, it's just a black screen or an extremely choppy video. The audio will play fine.
I haven't deleted the original files from my PC hard drive yet. If I import a file from that drive everything works fine. No choppy playback and good audio. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong or if I need to put the gopro studio on my external hard drive to see if that works… Possibly? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
