Using an iPad Air with a Gopro Hero 4 Silver? Storage capacity problem? How to increase storage for an ipad?

I'm going abroad for a few months and plan to shoot some videos using a Gopro Hero 4 Silver. I was hoping to be able to use my iPad air to do some very basic editing of the videos and then upload them to a blog. I was testing everything out and when I went to transfer the gopro footage I'd filmed from my micro SD card to my ipad air (using the apple lightning cable to sd card reader) I got an error message telling me that I didn't have enough space? This may sound stupid but I didn't really think the storage capacity on the ipad would be a problem. I'm assuming that the gopro files are just really big because I shot them in 1080? I don't really have any experience using cameras or ipads so I'm just wondering where to go from here. Bringing my laptop isn't an option due to space and I can't afford to buy a new notebook before I leave so please don't suggest I try editing the videos on either of those. Would getting an external storage device solve the problem and how would that work? Any suggestions would be helpful! Thanks in advance!
