Can sports camcorders be used for everyday recording as well?

I want a camcorder for family parties and stuff like that and was looking at the Sony - AS100 HD Action Cam.
Would this be a good camera for basic family outings? Amusement pArks, parties, awards ceremonies, baby moments etc?
Or what would you recommend? Thanks so much
