Converting GoPro videos for editing?

Currently I have a GoPro Hero3+ and I do most of my recording in 1080p. I am experienced with Sony Vegas Pro and use that for most of my video editing. However, all of my files are enormous in size. I have a 10 min video that is 3.8gb and the bitrate is 41,506kbps. So it's really hard to edit videos when the format is so big.

Currently I have been using Handbrake to convert the videos. I have the settings set to keep all the formatting the same except for the bitrate. This shrunk the video down to.27gb at 3679kbps. Which is much easier to work with.

I would like to know if there is any better way to do this. I currently want to keep as much formatting as I can (Especially FPS). Sony Vegas doesn't work very well with these RAW files and I don't have the money to buy a SSD just for videos. If you don't believe handbrake is a good editor, please let me know what other programs work for this situation.
