Is the battery bacpac any good for GoPro Hero3?

I use my GoPro primarily for skiing. (GoPro Hero 3 Black Edition)

For the average day, I end up using 3 batteries and most of the time it is just barely enough. I have the remote, so the GoPro always has the Wi-Fi activated.

Right now, I use the remote to turn it on at the top of the hill, and turn it off while riding the chair lifts to save battery, but it still dies pretty fast.

More recently just got the GoPro App which will be a better remote and let me do playback, but has anyone tried the bacpac?

Average price for a normal battery is ~$20. Average price of the battery bacpac is ~$50. Do you get 2x the battery life from it? Since you have to use the special fat housing to hold it, it is kind of an all or nothing. Either need to just live with the 3-4 small batteries, or switch over to maybe 2 large batteries as I am not going to carry an extra housing with me.

Anyone have experience with the battery bacpac? I have seen mixed reviews all over the place.
