Are gopros worth it for filming surfing?

I'm thinking about saving up for one so I take some pov (point of view) surfing shots while riding a wave. They look good but they are quite expensive. I was wondering what others thought of the gopro in general (not just surfers) and are they worth all the money? My parents aren't rich and I'd have to save up for it myself. There aren't really any other cameras that seem quite as well designed as this one.
